19th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WASTE MANAGEMENT,
RESOURCE RECOVERY AND SUSTAINABLE LANDFILLING / 9-13 OCTOBER 2023

Long term landfill aftercare

Landfill disposal is considered the last option in all waste management legislations. Several efforts are currently being made to promote waste prevention and recycling, research projects are funded to progressively minimize the use of landfills.

However, hundreds of thousands of closed landfill are present on our territory, causing emissions and high costs for aftercare management, and this is likely to continue for an undefined amount of time. Also, this is not going to be changed by current improvement of waste management strategies. Too limited is the attention to this issue and too high the expected impact on the environment in the long term.

A workshop will be organized at Sardinia 2021 where the following issues will be addressed:

  • Current legislation on landfill aftercare: there is room for improvement
  • Reaching the final storage quality: state of the art and research
  • Integrated management of old landfill sites and of residual waste from separate collection: opportunities for synergies

Proposal of papers is warmly encouraged!
