Greenhouse gas emissions are causing changes in earth’s climate; waste management activities are definitely related to some of these emissions. Actually, the whole value chain of materials is involved, starting from the manufacture and distribution of goods to finish with the management of waste and post-consumer products.

The contribution of different phases of material cycle on greenhouse gas emissions is being investigated, the impact of different strategies still needs to be clarified.

Some of the open issues still needing debate:

• What is currently the role of waste prevention in the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and related climate change?
• Is recycling always the best option?
• What is the role of landfills as geological repository and carbon sink and how can this be assessed?
• What tools are currently available and reliable to support strategic decision?

Proposals of oral presentations or workshops to stimulate discussion on these issues are welcome!
