SESSION G05 / 14 October 2025 / 17:30 - 19:00
Workshop: Best practices for optimizing landfill biogas management
Chair / Presidente: David Agudelo-Romero (FR)
The session will focus on best-in-class landfill gas (LFG) management practices, innovative monitoring and mitigation technologies, and policy frameworks to support landfill biomethane as a key contributor to the energy transition.
While the EU pushes for a 10% cap on landfilling municipal waste by 2035, remaining landfills still pose a significant methane risk. By adopting high-efficiency gas capture and valorization strategies, emissions could be halved while increasing biomethane production by up to 26%—a critical contribution to the RepowerEU target of 35 bcm of biomethane by 2030.
The session will focus on three themes:
Best-in-class landfill gas valorization techniques and case studies from industry leaders.
Advanced emissions mitigation via oxidation layers and capture optimization.
Policy & regulatory tools enabling integration of landfill-derived biomethane into national energy strategies.
