19th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WASTE MANAGEMENT,
RESOURCE RECOVERY AND SUSTAINABLE LANDFILLING / 9-13 OCTOBER 2023

Control of Micro- and Nanoplastics in WM

FRIDAY 28 APRIL 2023 / 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM (GMT+2)
Margherita Ferrante
, University of Catania (IT)

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the massive plastic pollution from the heavy use of plastic materials, products and objects. An enormous production of plastic waste is determined, often mismanaged with consequent dispersion in the various environmental compartments. Due to erosion of exposed materials, such contamination results in microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic (NP) pollution and is highly likely to act as a vector to transport physical, chemical and biological pollutants from one area to another.
Thus, upgrading traditional waste management practices, such as reuse, recycling, landfilling and incineration, is essential to make plastic waste management sustainable to avoid this impending disaster.
The aim is to make the Webinar as interactive as possible, with delegates introducing themselves and describing any recirculation projects or issues that they are involved in. During the presentation of webinar materials, delegates are encouraged to raise issues, discuss case studies and aspects of particular interest to them.

TOPICS THAT WILL BE COVERED:

  • Definition of the problem
What is Plastic. Plastic spread in the environment. Micro- and nanoplastics.
  • Current WM and plastic waste management
The picture of the current management of waste and plastic waste is presented, highlighting the current critical issues and the consequences on the environment and on the health of the population.
  • Upgrading traditional waste management practices
We will discuss and show examples of the different types of plastic waste management used for reuse, recirculation and disposal and their performance.
  • Future perspectives and regulatory and technological interventions required

We will show future perspective with specific interventions and without specific interventions. Together we will try to imagine legislative and technological interventions suitable for eliminating the danger of the indiscriminate use of plastics.
